View this email in your browser STRACC Endorses Anne Hessburg for Commissioner STRACC endorses Anne Hessburg for Chelan County Commissioner, District 2, the position currently held by Bob Bugert. Anne’s policy experience, deep first-hand knowledge of land use issues, and plan for reforming Community Development make her the best candidate in this race. Chelan County voters are fortunate to have two excellent candidates on the ballot this fall. Both have deep roots in the community and a commitment to supporting residents, businesses, and property owners. Both understand the importance of predictability and fairness in the development and application of regulations on homeowners and businesses. But while both candidates share this broad goal, Anne has a plan to achieve it, starting with more effective leadership at Community Development. Anne has recognized that good decisionmaking requires effective, experienced leadership and competent, committed staff at every level. She has worked on both sides of the desk at Community Development - as a land use and shoreline planner for the county, and as a consultant at Grette and Associates, one of the county’s most respected firms working in land use and development permitting. This has given her firsthand experience with the chaos caused by leadership turnover and inconsistent direction within Community Development. Anne has emphasized that we all deserve dependable, clear, and consistent application of regulations, and experienced staff who will prioritize finding a workable permitting path forward. The STRACC board interviewed both candidates in this race. Throughout our interactions, Anne has been more responsive to the specific problems that the STR code is causing for owners, operators, and guests. Many STR owners are still struggling with unreasonable and inconsistent interpretations of code by Community Development staff. Anne has read the code in detail and understands that parts of it need to be fixed promptly, not two years from now. Anne also brings experience as an elected official, having served as a city councilmember and Mayor pro tempore for the City of Leavenworth. In our interactions with her, she emphasized that the circumstances and needs of unincorporated Chelan County differ from those of Leavenworth, and her belief that STRs should be regulated differently countywide than in the city. We believe that Anne’s experience on the Leavenworth council will allow her to engage more quickly and effectively as a new County Commissioner. STRACC respects the efforts, qualifications, and commitments of both candidates in this race. But at this time, we believe Anne Hessburg has the experience, understanding, and concrete plan needed to get Community Development working for our Chelan County community.
